Detailed itinerary

Day 1: We pick you up in Auckland and make our way to a Lord of the Rings fan’s dream location - the Hobbiton Movie Set, for your very own middle-earth adventure. Explore and learn behind the scenes secrets of scenes that were filmed here from both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies. You’ll see hobbit holes and visit the mill, the party tree and plenty of other structures and gardens built for the films. At the end of your tour you can relax at the Green Dragon Inn with a drink and a bite to eat.

We then depart Hobbiton and head further south to arrive in Rotorua, which is renowned for its geothermal activity and Maori culture. The city offers a range of different attractions for everyone from adrenaline junkies to those just looking to relax. We can help plan the perfect trip for you based around what will best suit your individual needs.

Day 2: Choose what you’d like to do from the range of wonderful options that allow you to enjoy the best of what Rotorua has to offer.

While you are here we recommend you visit one of Rotorua’s incredible thermal parks so you can experience the unique landscapes and volcanic activity. From bubbling mud pools, clouds of steam and natural hot springs you can relax in, you won’t be disappointed. There are a number of options, all with their own unique features and we can help suggest which one may suit you best.

We also highly recommend that you experience our Maori culture by visiting a Living Maori Village and witnessing incredible cultural performances and enjoy a Hangi – a mouth-watering feast cooked underground on hot rocks.

We can visit the Government Gardens where you can explore the historic gardens and take in the views of all there is to offer. While here you have the option of visiting the Rotorua museum if you want to discover Rotorua’s rich culture, volatile landscape and dramatic history. After this you might want to unwind and relax at the Polynesian Spa, a world-leading, natural hot mineral bathing and luxury spa retreat.

You can take a leisurely uphill gondola ride at Skyline Rotorua to marvel at the incredible views of Rotorua including the surrounding lakes and geothermal areas. At the top there is plenty for you to enjoy. From having a delicious meal at the Stratosfare Restaurant and Bar or the Market Kitchen Café to mountain biking or walking tracks that take advantage of the fantastic views there is something for everyone. You can even come up here in the evening to experience a guided tour of our galaxy with a stargazing experience! Enjoy the three luge tracks with differing skill levels as you speed downhill, twisting and turning with the stunning backdrop of Redwood forest. Or you can zoom through the forest on a zipline! If that still isn’t enough, you can test your limits at Rotorua’s highest and fastest adrenaline rush, with the Skyswing.

There are plenty of stunning rivers and lakes to explore which could be done either by jet boating, white water rafting, kayaking, parasailing and even stand up paddle boarding. The region is a fisherman’s dream if you’re after catching some trophy trout!

We can visit the Agrodome which provides a truly unique New Zealand farming experience with a display of interesting live farm shows.

If you’re interested in mountain biking or hiking there are some incredible trails we can take you to, including through the mighty Redwoods Forest, which is known as one of the most beautiful forests in the world.

You could take a helicopter or floatplane for spectacular views of Rotorua including its stunning lakes, geothermal reserves and remarkable volcanoes. You even have the option of landing on New Zealand’s only permanently active volcano White Island. This will be a truly unique experience you won’t forget anytime soon!

For those seeking adventure, there are plenty of options for you to choose from. You could visit Agroventures Adventure Park if you are looking for a truly unique experience. Here you can take a thrilling ride on one of New Zealand’s fastest jet boats and the world’s first ever jet-sprint! The closest you’ll get to being a superhero is by doing the Freefall Xtreme – New Zealand’s only wind tunnel and the only place you can body fly! Or experience the world’s one and only Shweeb – a suspended aerodynamic racing pod that you pedal as fast as you can. Race against your friends and family or there’s even a prize to win if you can beat the current world record! You can also do a bungy jump or take a ride on the Swoop super swing! Or you could visit Adventure Playground which offers the choice of quad biking, horse trekking, 4WD buggy tours and clay bird shooting!

Day 3: We depart Rotorua and head south to arrive in the town of Taupo which sits on the edge of New Zealand’s largest lake. We’ll stop at the incredible Huka Falls, where you’ll shortly see why its New Zealand’s most visited and photographed natural attraction!

The Great Lake Taupo has plenty of enjoyable water activities on offer from; kayaking, jet boating, jet skiing, white water rafting, parasailing, water skiing and wakeboarding. One of Taupo’s many natural wonders are some incredible Maori Rock Carvings that you can go and see either by taking a scenic cruise or sailing, while getting to enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the lake. Fishermen and fisherwomen could enjoy a fishing charter around Lake Taupo. Or if you want to visit the ‘Trout Fishing Capital of New Zealand’ then we can head out of town to Turangi so you can experience the very best that New Zealand trout and fly fishing has to offer.

Taupo offers plenty of delicious wine and cuisine as well as boutique shopping if you are looking for a more relaxed afternoon. We can visit the iconic Huka Prawn Park if you’d like some mouth-watering prawn dishes for lunch.

There are some world-class mountain biking tracks you could spend the day exploring or for the adventurous, there is also bungy jumping, skydiving, and quad biking. You can take a scenic flight on a helicopter or floatplane for a spectacular viewing experience. Golf players there are a range of courses for you to play on, including the famous Wairakei Golf & Sanctuary, which is one of the most popular golfing destinations in New Zealand and is not only an amazing golf course but also a beautiful environment for plants and birdlife. Or for anyone who’s interested you can try the Hole in One Challenge where you have to hit a golf ball 100 metres over the lake and onto a floating pontoon. All we can say is good luck!

If you want to relax after a busy day exploring Taupo we can take you to one of its many thermal hot pools, where you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings as you unwind.

Day 4: You can spend today exploring the best of Taupo or if you are interested, we can take a day trip and make our way to New Zealand’s oldest national park - Tongariro National Park which stretches around three active volcanoes, Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro, and has been acknowledged by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Tongariro National Park is home to the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, the best one-day hike in New Zealand and one of the best in the world. This trek features phenomenal volcanic scenery, where you will walk across a landscape of craters, lava flows, active volcanoes, mountain springs and emerald lakes and marvel at the stunning views of Lake Taupo and Mt Taranaki. The park also offers shorter walks to waterfalls and stunning volcanic features which may be more suitable for some people.

If you’re craving a bit of adventure how about you partake in some white water rafting, kayaking, fly fishing or mountain biking while getting to explore the diverse and incredible landscape. Golf players may like to play a round at Waiouru golf course, New Zealand’s highest 18-hole golf course and has stunning views of Mt Ruapehu, Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro from various parts of the course.

Lord of the Rings fans we can organise an incredible tour for you where you can visit some of the locations where the trilogy was shot. Locations throughout Tongariro National Park were used and is home to Mordor, Mount Doom and Emyn Muil. You can also visit the Mangawhero Falls where Gollum caught a fish in the pool at the top of these, and see the locations of Orc Country, Ithilien Camp, the door of Sammath Naur, and the Sea of Boulders.

If you have the means you can’t miss taking a scenic flight over Tongariro National Park that will allow you to see into the live craters of 3 mountains and provide you with breathtaking views of the national park's dramatic landscape including some incredible coloured mineral lakes that are situated on the mountains.

During the winter months you have the option of skiing or snowboarding at any of our three ski fields that Mount Ruapehu has to offer. Two of these ski fields are the largest in New Zealand and provide a wide range of terrain, from beginners to advanced skiers and snowboarders.

Day 5: We head to the dynamic west coast region of Taranaki which is known as ‘The Garden of New Zealand’ with its rich volcanic soil and warm environment the gardens are truly spectacular.

There are a number of gardens with a diverse range of landscapes and unique plant collections we can visit, including Pukepukra Park, Hollard Gardens and Tupare which are well worth exploring the displays of native and exotic specimens.

Egmont National Park is home to Mount Taranaki, New Zealand’s most perfectly formed volcano and offers plenty of walks through lush rainforests, to waterfalls and eroded rock pools, plus spectacular views. We can help arrange the most suitable walk for you if you are interested in exploring some natural beauty. In winter the mountain offers skiing or snowboarding.

The region has plenty of fantastic golf courses to choose from including the championship Ngamotu Links or coastal 9-hole courses, no matter where you wish to play all have guaranteed views of the mountain.
There are also an amazing collection of museums that may be worth visiting if you want to gain some insight to Taranaki’s interesting history. There is Puke Ariki which puts the spotlight on specific aspects of the region’s culture. Tawhiti Museum is regarded as New Zealand’s best private museum and uses hand-crafted life size exhibits and scale models to take you along an incredible journey through Taranaki’s history.

You can unwind and relax at Taranaki thermal spa, enjoying a private pool and massage if you really want to indulge.
You can also take a heli tour for an unforgettable day enjoying incredible views and landing at an isolated waterfall where you can swim, walk or simply enjoy the tranquillity. Before returning back to base for a celebratory drink, enjoy a delicious feast!

Day 7: We head north through some of our rich farmland to the incredible Waitomo Caves. You can experience the natural beauty of these caves and be left breathless when you see the stunning glowworms that light up the caves like stars. Either take a guided tour where you walk through these magnificent caves and then float gently along on a small boat or for the adrenaline junkies, how about jumping, abseiling, climbing and black water rafting through this glowworm wonderland?

We then depart Waitomo and head back to Auckland where we will drop you off at your accommodation.

Pick-up and drop-off services, our knowledgeable and friendly professional guiding services in a Luxury Vehicle, all guide and vehicle expenses including guide accommodation and guide meals. All taxes are also included. Our Experienced Host-Guides (Kaiarahi) not only become your local host but can lead you to popular local places and share with you our knowledge of New Zealand’s special cultures, cuisine, cityscapes and coastlines along with its unique flora and fauna.

All our private tours can be customised further specially for you. Any of our private tours can start from the final location instead and be enjoyed travelling the other way.

Private Tours
are operated exclusively for our guests and are priced per day per passenger for any group size from 1 pax to any number required.

Neill Sperath is a passionate New Zealander by choice.
