You will be collected in our beautiful ‘City of Sails’ (Auckland), which is nestled on a volcanic isthmus between the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea. You will first drive south-east along the Pacific Coast Highway and via the Seabird Coast to visit the Miranda Shoreline Centre. Here you have a great opportunity to see the migratory bird species that call this area home.
Continue on via towards The Coromandel Peninsula via the beautiful Karangahake Gorge and the active goldmining town Waihi, where you can enjoy views of the huge open pit mine. You also have the opportunity to explore the highly-interesting Waihi Gold Discovery Centre, where you can learn all about The Coromandel's goldmining history and current operations.
Today we are ready to explore the Eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula starting with a visit to Whitianga – this town is the main settlement of the Coromandel and is noted for its historical significance in both pre- and post-European times.
We then continue to allow for optional activities enroute such as:
• Optional self-guided walk within Te Whanganui a Hei Marine Reserve, hire a water taxi or take a wonderful kayak tour from Hahei beach to world-famous Cathedral Cove.
• Dig yourself a natural sand-spa bath on Hot Water Beach (note best times are 2 hours either side of low tide to experience this at its best).
• Drive up Mt Paku Lookout/optional walk to summit for views over Tairua and the amazing white sands of Pauanui beach.
An alternative option is to drive via the famous Hobbiton Movie Set enroute to Rotorua. Your morning departure & itinerary will need to allow 2 hour Hobbiton tour and 1.5 hour approx. travel to Rotorua post-Hobbiton. After drop-off in Rotorua, your guide will embark on the 3 hour return journey back to Auckland.
