Unwind on one of New Zealand’s most scenic highways, the famous Thermal Explorer Highway. This touring route takes in the special regional of Rotorua. Our very experienced and knowledgeable local Host-Guides will tell you about New Zealand and its extraordinary places you’ll see along the approximately 3 hour journey to the Sulphur City of Rotorua - one of New Zealand’s ‘hot spots’ and most visited tourism destinations.

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves offer a truly magic experience, unrivaled in the world. Waitomo Caves offer various caving options depending on how adventurous you are feeling. For a gentle option, choose a 45 minute tour, which includes a boat ride on an underground stream and a walk. The more adventurous may want to consider a 3 or 5 hour black water rafting option, which may include tubing, abseiling, waterfalls and climbing.

Get settled into your Rotorua accommodation or explore the area

After settling into our accommodation at our specially chosen hotel (we have a range of accommodation options for you, depending on your preferences), in the evening we highly recommend one of the unique Maori cultural experiences in Rotorua (own cost). Here you can enjoy a traditional Kai Maori (Maori food) cooked in a Hangi (earth oven) and enjoy a performance of song and dance in a traditional Maori village setting.  
 
Alternatively explore more of Rotorua on foot. Or how about a fishing trip to catch the world-famous Rotorua Trout on an evening lake cruise?

The next morning we can show you: 

  • Rotorua City 
  • Government Gardens and Rotorua Museum, which not only holds some of New Zealand’s most fascinating collections but is also housed in the stunning old Victorian bath house in the centre of the beautiful Government Gardens. 
  • Rotorua Lake Front with view across the to magical Mokoia Island 
  • Time-permitting, Redwood Forest (widely regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful forests) 
  • Blue Lake
  • Lake Tarawera with the peak of Mount Tarawera towering above the lake.

Additional tour options

Rotorua has something for everyone and as there is so much to choose from, we are happy to work in with your interests to maximise your time. Additional tour options include: 

  • Some of the world's most spectacular thermal areas, such as Wai-o-Tapu,Waimangu Volcanic Valley and Hells Gate. 
  • Helicopter or floatplane flights to see both Rotorua and volcanic sights from above. Fly via the volcanic crater of Mount Tarawera and landing on White Island, New Zealand's only - and active - marine volcano! 
  • Trout fishing on a lake cruise on Lake Rotorua or another spectacular lake in the region, or fly fishing with an expert guide.
  • The Skyline Gondola, which will swing you up to the top of Mount Ngongotaha for a spectacular view and the luge
  • The Polynesian Spa, on the site of one of Rotorua’s historic bath houses in the lovely Government Gardens, is also home to one of the world’s best spas. This is also a great option on the evening of day 1 instead of the Maori cultural experience if you prefer. 
  • White water rafting on challenging local river courses. 
  • Experience all the magic of New Zealand farming at The Agrodome

Hobbiton Movie Set

Explore "Middle Earth" on the way back to Auckland

On our way back to Auckland, if we depart Rotorua by lunchtime  we can incorporate a visit to the famous Hobbiton Movie Set near Matamata, which shot to stardom as Hobbiton in Peter Jackson’s famous “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” film trilogies. We return you to Auckland by about 5pm or to fit in with your requirements.
