Detailed itinerary

Day 1: We will collect you from your Auckland accommodation where we then head north to the magnificent Waipoua Forest. Home to some of New Zealand’s largest kauri trees, you can experience one of the amazing Footprints Waipoua Tours. Walk through rare flora and fauna to gaze in awe at these beautiful trees while hearing the interesting stories and legends of the forest told by a Maori guide. You can meet “The Father of the Forest” which is the oldest known Kauri tree in the world. Before the tour ends you will have the memorable experience of meeting Tane Mahuta, New Zealand’s largest kauri tree which is regarded as “Lord of the forest” and you will surely see why.

We then head to Opononi which became famous in the mid 1950’s by a friendly dolphin named Opo who let children ride on her back. From here we overlook the beautiful Hokianga Harbour and its stunning sand dunes. From the Opononi wharf you could catch a water taxi over to these massive sand dunes on the other side of the harbour and try sandboarding. This provides you with quite a thrill as you will slide down the sand dunes on boogie boards.

We then head to the stunning Bay of Islands for a little slice of paradise.

Accommodation in the Bay of Islands region.

Day 2: We make our way to the beautiful town of Paihia which is rightly referred to as “the jewel of the Bay of Islands”. Whether you are after a day filled with adventure or want to simply relax, Paihia has something for everyone.

You have the option to explore the very best of the Bay of Islands including the spectacular Hole in the Rock a number of ways including a boat cruise, catamaran, or even by jet ski. If you are in luck you may also get to sight some dolphins and whales along the way. If spotting dolphins isn’t quite enough for you, how about you book a tour that offers an amazing experience where you can get up close and personal when you swim with them.

If you are after a truly unforgettable experience then we can arrange for you to get up close to the Hole in the Rock, landing by helicopter on the newly built helipad situated on top of the island. Here you will be surrounded by breathtaking scenery and you have the option of learning the island’s unique history and its cultural significance from a Maori guide. Very few people have ever experienced the island this way, would you like to be one of them?

Other options you may be interested in doing while in the Bay of Islands include; fishing charters, parasailing, kayaking or diving.

You can take a short ferry ride over to romantic Russell if you are interested in dining at some outstanding seaside restaurants or exploring some historic buildings including Pompallier Mission and Christ’s Church.

If you are interested in discovering more about New Zealand’s unique history, then visiting the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is a must-do! This is our most important historic site as this is where the Treaty of Waitangi – New Zealand’s founding document was signed in 1840. Here you can visit the Museum of Waitangi, the historic Treaty House, the magnificently carved Meeting House and the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe. You’ll hear stories about the momentous events that helped shape New Zealand and guided tours and cultural performances are available for your enjoyment.

Accommodation in the Bay of Islands region.

Day 3: After breakfast we can head to the top of the North Island to the beautiful Cape Reinga where you can watch from the lighthouse as two oceans collide. Be sure to have your camera ready as you won’t want to miss the breathtaking scenery that surrounds you. However, you also have the opportunity to take either a helicopter or aeroplane scenic flight which provides an excellent way to travel to Cape Reinga while also getting to experience some of the most spectacular coastal scenery that Northland has to offer. You’ll see some beautiful harbours and beaches, some of which are only accessible by either air or sea. This option can also provide you with the experience of “sand surfing” which entails sliding down Te Paki’s giant sand dunes on boogie boards. Whichever way you choose to see Cape Reinga it will be a memory you won’t ever forget.

After a wonderful day exploring the far north we then take you to one of our natural treasures - the stunning Matauri Bay with its beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear waters.

We strive in making sure you have a range of options so you can choose the best fit for you, however for your last night’s accommodation we highly recommend The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs which is Northland’s premier luxury destination. You will be surrounded by outstanding 180-degree views of the Pacific Ocean. From a private pink beach to a world-class golf course to a luxury spa, there is surely something here that everyone will love.

There are also a range of other lovely accommodation options in the Matauri Bay area which we will happily arrange for you on your behalf if you wish.

Day 4: You have the morning to enjoy all that Matauri Bay has to offer before we set off on our way back to Auckland.

We will head to Kerikeri which is the largest town in Northland and is rich in history. Here you can see some of the most historic buildings in New Zealand, including the Stone Store and Kerikeri Mission Station. To stretch your legs you can follow a quick and easy walk to see the stunning Rainbow Falls.

Our next stop is the Kawiti Caves where you can see pristine rainforest and breathtaking rock formations. Here you have the option to discover the magic of Northland’s ultimate glowworm experience by entering a 200 metre limestone cave system where galaxies of glowworms await. You’ll learn all about the lifecycle of these glow worms and even get close enough to see its body and tail light which is a stunning blue/green colour.

From here we head south to Whangarei where we stop at the town basin which is filled with some lovely cafes, restaurants, art galleries and museums you can take some time to look around at.

Once we depart Whangarei we make our way back down to Auckland where we will drop you off at your city accommodation.
